What are Solids, Liquids, and Gases?

Ready...set...GO! You're off to find the definitions of solids, liquids, and gases! You will only be given five hints to links to accomplish the task. Make sure to give a thorough explanation of each and don't forget to give at least three examples of each. Good luck and may the matter be with you!

Solve the mystery!

Have you ever wondered how ice is made? Your next task is to work with a partner and examine the two websites. Find out how the different states of matter transform into another form of matter. At the end of  this activity, you and your partner will be assigned one example of a transformation and you must be able to explain the change in relationship to the class(i.e. What happens when a solid piece of chocolate changes into a liquid?). Be able to use the terms freezing, melting, condensation, and evaporation.

Questions to think about and answer:

1. What type of temperature is needed to make the change between matter?

2. Explain how the molecules are moving and what they would like under a microscope.

Help the Aliens Classify Solids, Liquids, and Gases!

A group of aliens named Dilos, Diuqil, and Sag have come to earth with different items that they have collected for the past ten years.  They don't know what the items are and must categorize them into three groups. Your task is to help them categorize the items into three groups so that they can return to their planet with their findings and share the information with their family. Make sure to number one through twelve accordingly to help the aliens classify each object into the correct state of matter. Remember, each item may be categorized more than once. Good luck and may the matter be with you!

Diary of a Solid, Liquid, or Gas

Imagine what it would be like to be an ice cube. What would you do everyday? How would you feel? What would other people, items, objects, and other states of matter think about you? How would you interact with others? The teacher will give you a number from one through three. If you are a one, you will have to pick a solid to write about. If you are a two, you will have to pick a liquid to write about. If you are a three, you will have to pick a gas to write about (states of matter should be appropriate and must be approved by the teacher). You will then read and share your diary in front of the class.

Example:

Dear Diary,

Today was a cold and busy day.  I was hanging out in the freezer in an ice cube tray when suddenly the door opened. A woman grabbed the ice tray and started taking out ice cubes and placing them in her cup of orange juice.  She didn't grab me and I was so happy because I didn't want to melt in her juice.  I wanted to explore my surroundings. The woman filled up the ice tray with water and I got splashed a few times!  The woman put the tray back in the freezer and slammed the door. Burrrrrr! It was really cold in there! I had another encounter with another person. This time a man opened the freezer, grabbed me and a few other ice cubes and threw us in his glass of dark soda. Splash! We all landed in the soda. When I felt the soda, it felt like I was melting. I had fun being an ice cube.

                                                                            Love Always,

                                                                            Ice Cube Jr.
