Assignment One: 

Determining Training Needs for Special and General Education Instructors for Collaborative Teaching

Scenario One

You are a general education teacher.  You believe that an assessment (test or quiz) you’ve made was appropriately modified and adapted for the needs of an individual student with learning disabilities.  You have worked closely with the student and feel confident that he/she will do very well.  When you grade the assessment the student’s work is far below your expectation and there seems to be a large disparity between what the student has demonstrated in class and what you have observed on the assessment.  Describe a problem solving approach that you might use with the student, your collaborative colleague, and possibly the student's parents to determine what each party's role is in eliminating the discrepency.  Identify the order of the actions and communications you would take.

 

Scenario Two:

You are the teacher of students with special needs.  When administering an exam you find that it does not seem to meet the student’s needs.  Although the general education teacher has expressed every confidence that the student will do very well, you see that he/she is not answering the questions correctly.  The student is misunderstanding the expectations and becoming exasperated.  Describe a problem solving approach that you might use with the student, your collaborative colleague, and possibly the student's parents to determine what each party's role is in eliminating the discrepency.  Identify the order of the actions and communications you would take.  

 

Feel free to draw from a previous experience you’ve had in the classroom when creating your word document to submit.

Create an outline of questions that you could use for a 10- 15 minute weekly or biweekly collaborative meeting with a colleague.  This document should allow your team to assess teaching strategies as either effective or ineffective based on observed and measured student progress.  It should also allow your team to problem solve and plan alternate approaches based on your shared student's needs.  The purpose is to create a “report card” for yourself to ensure that your instruction is appropriate for the needs of your individual students with learning disabilities.  This document should be generic enough to meet varying student needs, but precise enough to give you feedback that can help you make specific accommodations and modifications where necessary.

b.  Create an accountability concept that promotes 100% cooperation between both teachers
     of general education and teachers of students with special needs.
