The Liberation of Gabriel King is a novel that is thematically very rich yet written in language that is accessible to readers at all levels.

I highly recommend it for grade 5 and grade 6 literature circles.  One of the more prominent themes in the novel is racism.  With that in mind, sensitivity is required when previewing/introducing the book.  The cultural perspective of people in that place and time, Georgia, 1976, becomes an important main idea.

When I created this webquest, I experimented with different words and sentence structures so that the (Flesch-Kincaid formula) text would not exceed a sixth grade reading level.  In this way, the research project pairs with the readability of the text.
