Process

You and your group members will plan a "Dust Day" party that will include era-appropriate food, historical decorations, financial information, music and fashion information. In a group of five, you will research historical information relevant to your role and the 1930s to help you plan your party. Each person within the group will be responsible for researching relevant information and contributing to the group presentation using their chosen role.

1. Begin by reviewing the Dust Bowl websites to have a basic overview of the time period. Use this information to design and create an imaginative invitation to your “Dust Day” party (a link to resources is on the bottom of this page).

2. Next, within your group choose one of the five roles: caterer, decorator, treasurer, music director or fashion advisor (each group member will have a different role).

Caterer: You are in charge of making a recipe associated with this time period. As the caterer, you must have copies of the recipe for each student in the class and also enough food from your recipe to serve to the students.

·

Decorator: You will research Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal and use creativity to create a poster. No one likes boring party decorations, so make it interesting!

Treasurer: You are responsible for compiling information about the stock market crash, the Great Depression, and a chart that compares and contrasts the cost of things during this time period with how much those same items cost today. You may want to think about choosing items with particular appeal to your teenage party-goers.

Music Director: You will be responsible for researching popular music of this time period. As the music director, you will choose a musical artist, present a biography of that person, hand out copies of the lyrics to all students, and then play a song by that artist. To keep the party going, you need to present your artist and the music with enthusiasm.

Fashion Advisor: You will research and present information about the popular fashions of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era. The fashion advisor will also come to the “Dust Day” party in an outfit reminiscent of this time period.

3. Once you have chosen your role, begin completing the necessary research in order to plan the best possible 1930s bash. You may use the websites provided here on the WebQuest to get you started, and in addition to those sites, you must utilize one website of your own choosing and one non-Internet source (remember, they didn't have computers in the 1930s...gasp!  ).

4. After you have done your research, your group should meet to share its findings. You should use this time to bounce creative ideas off of one another to help you in planning your party and making it an event to remember.

5. After your group meets, you should begin creating your portion of the final project that will be presented at the “Dust Day” soiree. As you are working on your project, use the ideas and input of other group members.

6. Present your information to the entire class on “Dust Day.” Your presentation should include all of the required elements relating to the group party planner roles. As a group, you should work to engage and interest your audience members by presenting historical information in an imaginative manner. At the end of the presentation, the group will turn in all of its research to the teacher.
