High school English students will plan a party for "Dust Day" using historical information associated with the novel, Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse.
Teacher Introduction
This WebQuest came from reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. This novel is historical fiction written in free verse poetry. It is a beautiful story that ties in many events from American history in the 1930s. By studying these events (the Dust Bowl, Great Depression, stock market crash, FDR, etc...), students have a better sense of the struggle of the characters in the book. Then, they can relate to them and have phenomenal class discussion because they are able to see how history has the potential to come to life.
