"Each of us is destined to become the hero in at least one story -- our own!" -- Mr. Swigart
Some of the most interesting and exciting stories ever told are true ones. Non-fiction tells a true story from the author's viewpoint. The author of such a story tries to find out all he or she can: the events from the past, the order in which they occur, the personalities involved, and how everything comes together in a meaningful way. In an autobiography, you are both the author and the person the story is about. By participating in our little fantasy, you will complete your own story. It was a dark and stormy night . . . |

"Listen kid . . .
You're about to begin a new year in a new class. Getting to know yourself and getting to know others makes for some mighty interesting business . . .
detective business!

"We're looking for a number of stolen 'golden birds.' They're the stuff that dreams are made of, kid! If you do your part, we'll be able to crack the case and get our hands on them, and you'll become a full-fledged detective!

"You're going to start by investigating a few things that happened not very long ago. You will be trying to come up with some important background information. It's your big chance to make it as a detective. Are you willing to take your first case? Good.
"Let's get started. First, a detective has to take and
keep detailed notes. You will feel a little bit like a
reporter, but it is important work. Here's your notepad and pencil. This is the first part of your Detective's Kit. You will earn the rest.

"A detective practically runs his or her legs off in order to get the information needed to crack a case. We call it 'leg work.' |
"Okay, kid, it's almost time to say goodbye. Don't get all mushy about it, either, see? Listen, carefully, now. You'll be meeting a few mysterious characters. They're working with us on this case. The first is a dame. She looks like a long cool drink of water, if you catch my meaning. She will fill you in on your tasks and get you started. Do exactly as you're told. Finish each step before moving on. If all goes well, I have a feeling we'll be seeing each other again, real soon. So good luck, kid! I'll be seein' ya!"
