Process

PROCESS 1

You will go the Holocaust Museum website by clicking on the following link: http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/.

Read the sections "Introduction to the Holocaust" and "Holocaust Encyclopedia." In the latter go to the web links entitled:

These sites will provide you with information about Hitler's motives, means of persuasion, and methods of extermination.

PROCESS 2

Survey images on the web of Hitler's speeches, national rallies, and the Holocaust itself. Here you will take notes on each image and reflect on your feelings about the images.

First go to and explore "Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust":  http://fcit.usf.edu/HOLOCAUST/resource/gallery/gallery.htm

Next, go to "Holocaust Survivors": http://www.holocaustsurvivors.org/cgi-bin/data.show.pl?di=list&da=photos&so=title

Next go to "The Holocaust": http://www.oskarschindler.info/Holocaust/Album1.htm

Next, consider whether or not the United States is guilty of conducting its own holocaust against Native Americans. After our quick discussion about the topic of genocide in the U.S. look at the images of the forced removal of Native Americans at the following websites.

PROCESS 3

Based on the information you have been provided with (images, documents, and lecture) on both the Holocaust of WWII, and the forced Indian removal of the Jacksonian era, decide in groups whether or not the two events are comparable to one another, and reach your decision as to whether or not the U.S. conducted a Holocaust of its own. Be sure to support your arguments with evidence. You can use any of the resources provided in class.

Ideas on how to word your group argument(s) could be as follows:

-We the group believe that the two groups are/are not comparable on the basis that...

-We also believe that the U.S. did/did not conduct a Holocaust because...

Using the jigsaw technique divide the tasks of comparing, contrasting and writing the group argument.

Finally, present your positions to the class.
