Process
Stage 1
Time to read:
Read this webpage. Find out what it says about things that you can do if someone is being bullied.
Children Youth and Women's Health Service- Bullying
Time to talk:
In your group, talk about some things that you might be able to do if someone is being bullied.
Stage 2
Now that you know something about bullying, it is time to choose your special jobs.
Special Jobs:
Everyone in your group will have a special job in making this video for the school. You will need to choose one. Your teacher will help you choose one that suits your ability.
Everyone will act in the video except the director. The director’s job is the hardest, but most important job.
These are the jobs:
Interviewer Your job is to ask Year Ones in the playground about bullying. Also, find out what kind of injuries/ illness occur at your school due to bullying by interviewing the first-aid officer and the principal.
Reporter Your job is to watch and listen in the playground at lunch times and tell the group about bullying that you saw. You are also to find out what the school rules say about bullying.
Researcher A Your job is to find out about ‘Bullying’. You will find out what causes it and what solutions there are.
Researcher B Your job is to find out all about ‘Making friends’.
Writer Your job is to write the story for the video with information and ideas from your team. It is also your job with the director to learn about different ideas for the video.
Director Your job is to be responsible for organising the actors and equipment required and making sure everyone does what they are supposed to do in the video. It is also your job with the writer to learn about different ideas for the video.

Stage 3
There are two jobs for you. First, you need to do a tape interview of students. Then, you need to either interview the First Aid lady or the Principal.
Tape Interview
· Form a group with other interviewers from other groups.
· Make up some questions about bullying and write them down (no more than 10).
· Your teacher will ask some children if they would mind answering questions about bullying.
· Use a tape recorder to tape kids in the playground answering questions.
Example questions:
Have you been bullied this year at school?
Can you tell us what happened?
Have you ever seen bullying happen?
What did you do?
Personal Interview:
With the group of interviewers, make up some questions about the problem of bullying at our school. Have one of your group ask the First Aid lady or The Principal if you all could interview them. Make a time to see them in their office.
Ask your questions and write one-word answers.
Example questions:
· Does this school have many problems with bullying?
· What problems does it cause?
· What is the worst story of bullying here?
The reporter has two jobs. The first is to observe the playground. The second is to find out the school rules about bullying.
Playground watch
Form a group with other reporters from other groups. With this group, decide what kinds of bullying there are and make a list.
Examples include:
- Name calling
- Deliberately ignoring someone.
You will watch the playground at lunch time together for examples of bullying and tell the teacher.
School rules
Go with the group of reporters to the office and ask if someone can give you each a copy of the school rules about bullying.
Ask the teacher to read the rules with you and talk about what they mean.
Your job is to find out more about what causes bullying and what you can do about it. You then need to make a poster for your group so that it will help them plan your video.
Your poster should have 2 sides with points numbered under these headings- What causes bullying? What can you do about bullying?
What causes bullying?
Find out what causes bullying by reading this website:
What can you do about bullying?
Click on the blue address below.
Your first job is to find out about how to make friends. Being able to make and keep friends is something that bullies may have difficulty with. Maybe some ideas here can help you with ideas for stopping bullying. Your second job is to make a poster to show your group. Call your poster 'How to make friends'.

It is your job to write the play that will be used for the video. Your job is to discuss ideas for the style of the video with the director. You will need to decide which style you want to choose.
‘Home and Away’ is a drama. A drama is a kind of play. People are pretending to be someone else. Have a look at how these people are acting. Notice there is a story.
Maybe your play could be like an ad. Ads are short, tell a story and make you think about something. Although this one has cartoon characters, you can see that there are different characters. After you click the web address below, then click
Here is another ad. Click on the 30 second clip. This one shows a problem and how they are helping to fix it.
You could also make your play like a news story. Go to this address and click on 9 news video. Watch two or three to get the idea of how a story is presented.

Stage 4
Meeting to plan the story for the video
Now it is time to meet with the people doing the other jobs in your group.
You need to:
· Talk about what you learned about bullying.
· Talk about making friends.
· Talk about the writer and director’s ideas for style of play for the video. (Eg: would it be like an ad, or the news, or like a drama show like ‘Home and Away’).
· Talk about ideas for the story. How is the problem of bullying going to be shown? How are you going to show solutions to the problem?
At the end of this meeting, you should have agreed on the style and the idea for the story.
Writer
Either write your group's story, or tell it to the teacher who can write it for you.
Important
· The story must include all the people in your group as actors, except the director.
· The story must be short and not go longer than 5 minutes.
· The story must show at least one problem of bullying.
· The play must show at least one solution to the problem.
· You need to use your group’s ideas.
· The story will be recorded on video at school.
Director
Once your story has been written, talk to the teacher about who should play the different roles in the video.
Talk to the teacher about the details of the video filming and ask the teacher to write it down.
When will the film be done?
Who will operate the camera?
What will the actors wear?
Will the actors have makeup on?
Do you need any props (items to make it real), like a desk or a chair?
Remember: It is your job to make sure that everyone has what they need on the day of filming! So, you need to talk to your group.
Stage 5
Presenting a play
About Acting
When you are in a play, you pretend to be someone else. Can you pretend to be a Dad for instance? It is important to speak loudly and clearly. It is also important to use actions and your face to express your feelings. People will believe you if you do this.
Let’s try it!
In your group, choose one of the stories below. Choose characters that you will play and pretend to be that character.
The Dinner table
Mum and Dad and the kids are at the table for dinner. Dad and mum ask the children about their day at school. One of the children says that they were in trouble at school today for talking in class. What do the mum and dad say about it? What do the other children say about it? Then the other children start to annoy each other. What do the mum and dad say or do about it?
Make sure you take turns talking.
Bigger and better
A group of kids are at school and start talking about what they did on the weekend. As each one talks, they try and tell a ‘bigger and better’ story.
For example: ‘….Oh is that all… well my mum took me to Sea World and we went on the roller coaster all day!’ ‘Oh, that’s nothing, we went to a resort where they have a huge swimming pool and it is right next to the beach!’
Try and act out their behaviour and actions as they tell their stories to each other. Make sure you take turns talking.
Finally, talk about how your play went:
· Was it fun?
· What did you like best about it?
· What didn’t you like about it?
· Who did the best acting and why?
Stage 6
Practice the play
First, practice reading the video story (script) while you are sitting down.
Then, practice acting it.
Sit down and talk about how it went. How could you do it better?
Practice it again.
Sit down again and talk about it again. Can you still do it better? How?
Practice it again.
Director
It is important that you give the actors ideas about what to do. There are many things to think about. Remember it will be filmed later.
For example:
· Should they sit or stand?
· Do they need more expression on their face?
· Do they need to talk louder?
Stage 7
Making the video
Director
Before filming
Now it is time for your most important job. So that you can film, it is important that everything and everyone is ready.
- Are the costumes ready?
- Do you have makeup ready?
- Do you have props ready?
During Filming
Make sure that:
· Everyone knows what to do and when to do it;
· There are no distractions in the background like people or car noises;
· Everything you need is ready.
Everyone else
Your behaviour needs to be its best ever. This won’t work unless you cooperate with the director. Ask the director what they want you to do.
Remember, this video will be shown to the school, so try your best to speak loudly, show your feelings with your face and movements.
Most of all have lots of fun!
