Thematic Unit: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry This unit will provide various opportunities for ESOL students to read great literature and apply writing skills with the use of graphic organizers and maps in a variety of related content area activities. The students will learn and explore the following content areas: Reading, Music, Geography, Math, and History. I chose an Award winning book that depicts history, and different geographic locations to help students relate to other parts of the World, allowing all multicultural differences in the classroom to benefit from these lessons. This story takes place during the 1930’s in rural Mississippi. The “point of view” in this novel is of a child dealing with racial tensions in the Deep South The story depicts antagonistic conflicts of the times in detail and the effect it has on the lives of the African American people. The courage of the children living through these experiences will function as bibliotherapy for the many students dealing with intolerance.
