This Webquest is designed to introduce a student to the game of chess. Students have the opportunity to visit the 1972 Spassky/Fischer Chess World Championship; the history of the game; its popularity; basic rules of the game and finally, an opportunity to play chess in our own classroom "mini-class tournament" after the Webquest is completed.

Introduction

In the 1970’s, the world was experiencing the “Cold War” between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics . This period began around 1947 after World War II and continued until the end of 1991 when the USSR ’s system of government (communism) collapsed.

The Cold War was not fought on the traditional battlefield. Instead, both Superpowers tried to gain an advantage over each other in other ways, like the number of nuclear weapons each country controlled and what influence they could use on other, smaller countries having strategic value to the larger, more powerful countries.

The whole world watched as each fought for any advantage, even in contests like the Olympics, where one country made every effort to dominate the other in all the different Olympic sports.

Another one of the many arenas where the two superpowers met was… over a chessboard!
