Teacher Resources
This Webquest is just a slight "tap on the shoulder" for a student where the game of chess is concerned.
The followup can take many forms: formation of a school chess club, more advanced lessons in the classroom, or just fun chess exercises for those days when a teacher gets a bit ahead of the lesson format.
The game sparks its own excitement among students, it is easy to learn and chess sets are available everywhere for a pittance.
In my opinion, the best information I have seen regarding chess and teaching are two books by Todd Bardwick, a national chess master:
- Teaching Chess in the 21st Century (2004. Chess Detective Press, Englewood CO)
- Chess Workbook for Children (2006. Chess Detective Press, Englewood CO)
For follow-up to this Webquest , these books are exactly what are needed. Besides well-thought-out lessons and rubrics for lesson plan quizzes, Mr. Bardwick also explores in depth the relationship of chess to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, further making these books a priceless addition to the classroom
Additionally, the availability of chess websites on basic rules as well as tactics, end games, openings, strategies is almost unlimited. There are many thousands of sites for a teacher or student to use to improve chess skills!
