Activity 1

The Butterfly Life Cycle

Butterfly, Butterfly by Jan Warren.

Butterfly, butterfly, laying lots of eggs.
The eggs hatch caterpillars with short stubby legs.
Caterpillar, caterpillar,eating 'till you're big.
Then walking very slowly, you hang from a twig.
Sleep now, and change, but very, very soon...
Caterpillar, caterpillar, you changed, you didn't die.
You grew wings, and long legs, to become a beautiful butterfly!

1.  Students should break up into 4 JigSaw Groups.  Each group should be no more then 5 students.  Each group will research one part of the butterfly life cycle.  After, they will go back to their groups(A student from each different group should be in the main group) and teach the rest of their group what they learned about that life cycle.  That way, all students will have learned about each section of the life cycle by the time they are done.  The four stages to research are: The Egg, which lasts from 3-5 days, The Caterpillar, which lasts 12 to 18 days, The Chrysalis(Pupa), which lasts 7 to 10 days, and The Adult Butterfly, which lasts about 2 weeks.

2.  The next lesson, each student should go to his/her seat and draw a picture of the four stages of the butterfly life cycle according to what was learned the lesson before from the JigSaw groups.  Labels must be used in order to clearly explain what has been learned.  This drawing will be graded according to the rubric in this WebQuest.  Examples of what are expected are in the links above.

GROUP WORK

POWER POINT PRESENTATION (2 WEEKS)

3.  Students must now create a PowerPoint slide show to describe the life cycle of a butterfly.  Students should work with the same groups as the first day so that each student is an expert on at least one stage of the life cycle.  To help explain Power Point, go to the following site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/default.aspx

Students have two weeks to complete this slide show.  After two weeks, they will present it to the rest of the class.

Activity 4

      Butterfly or Moth?

Here we are going to investigate the differences between butterflies and moths.

You will take out your magnifying glasses and microscopic lenses to take a closer look at the differences between these two incredible insects!

Go to the Butterfly or Moth? - Enchanted Learning Software

After exploring the differences, print out a butterfly and moth organizer.  On each of the organizers, write facts about both the butterfly and moth using the information from the Enchanted Learning Website.

Activity 5

Students must complete a search on the internet or in books of his/her local area to find which types of butterflies live in that area.  Some websites to help in the search are as follows:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_butterflies

http://www.thebutterflysite.com/gardening.shtml

http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/

After students are able to find the intended information, they are to write notes down that they feel are important.  These notes will turn into a poster in the next lesson.

Poster Making

Students are to pair up with another student who lives close to them.  They are asked to design a poster with facts about a butterfly that lives in the area that the students are from.  Also, students are to add the migration pattern that the butterfly follows.
