Teacher Process
In this section, we will lead you through the three tasks that make up the student process section. You will see each section of the task and read the notes that we include to help you teach that particulur task.
Butterfly, Butterfly by Jan Warren.
Butterfly, butterfly, laying lots of eggs.
The eggs hatch caterpillars with short stubby legs.
Caterpillar, caterpillar,eating 'ti you're big.
Then walking very slowly, you hang from a twig.
Sleep now, and change, but very, very soon...
Caterpillar, caterpillar, you changed, you didn't die.
You grew wings, and long legs, to become a beautiful butterfly!
Make sure to have copies of this poem for all of your students!
Task 1
1. Students should break up into 4 JigSaw Groups. Each group should be no more then 5 students. Each group will research one part of the butterfly life cycle. After, they will go back to their groups(A student from each different group should be in the maini group) and teach the rest of their group what they learned about that life cycle. That way, all students will have learned about each section of the life cycle by the time they are done. The four stages to research are: The Egg, which lasts from 3-5 days, The Caterpillar, which lasts 12 to 18 days, The Chrysalis(Pupa), which lasts 7 to 10 days, and The Adult Butterfly, which lasts about 2 weeks.
You were given websites to use to help in this section of the lesson. Make sure to choose how many things you would like to students to write about from each section of the life cycle.
Task 2
2. The next lesson, each student should go to his/her seat and draw a picture of the four stages of the butterfly life cycle according to what was learned the lesson before from the JigSaw groups. Labels must be used in order to clearly explain what has been learned. This drawing will be graded according to the rubric in this WebQuest. Examples of what are expected are in the links above.
JigSaw Groups are groups of children that are put into a group. From that group, children are each given a number. So, all of the 1's will meet, all of the 2's and so on. Once they are done meeting with their numbered groups, they will report back to their original groups. So, each group will have a 1, a 2, a 3 and so on.
Task 3
GROUP WORK
POWER POINT PRESENTATION (2 WEEKS)
3. Students must now create a PowerPoint slide show to describe the life cycle of a butterfly. Students should work with the same groups as the first day so that each student is an expert on at least one stage of the life cycle. To help explain Power Point, go to the following site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/default.aspx
Students have two weeks to complete this slide show. After two weeks, they will present it to the rest of the class.
