Ready to travel through England and its history?

Read the instructions carefully and organize a nice school trip for your class!!

 

Step 1

In your group, choose one of the following castles (one castle for each group):

1) Arundel Castle

 

2) Herstmonceux Castle

 

3) Leeds Castle

 

4) Hever Castle

 

Step 2

Your class will travel to England and spend 4 days visiting castles in the south.

The group will arrive on 27th May 2007 at Heathrow Airport in London and will leave on 1st June. Each group will contribute to the organization of the whole trip and be responsible for  the travel, the accomodation and the visit of the castle. Students will have to prepare a detailed program, an oral presentation of the castle and a poster.

 

General Information:

- Departure from Lugano on 27th May at 15.05 and arrival in Zurich at 15.50. Departure from Zurich at 17.00 and arrival in London at 17.50 (Heathrow Airport, Terminal 2).

- Return on 1st June: Departure from London Heathrow (Terminal 2) at 13.50 and arrival in Zurich at 16.35. Departure from Zurich at 17.25 and arrival in Lugano at 18.05.                

 

                                        

Step 3

Each group will find specific information about their task here below. After collecting the details, check Step 4 to know how to continue.

 

Group 1

You will have to:

- find the information following the instructions below

- prepare a detailed plan of the travel

- find some information about the castle and prepare a poster (with photos)

- describe your part of the journey to the rest of the class

Your program will include:

- the travel from the airport (London Heathrow, Terminal 2) to Arundel (27th May)

- the accomodation for the night in Arundel

- the visit of the castle and a special activity at the castle (28th May)

- the travel from Arundel to Eastbourne

Let's begin the planning!!

1. To organize the travel from Heathrow Airport to Arundel, click on the National Railway website. Then write the departure place (Heathrow Airport Terminal 2) and the arrival city (Arundel). Select the correct date for the travel and the time (check the arrival time of your plane in the general information above).

2. To find a place to sleep for the night, click on this site and complete the table (destination and day of arrival). You will probably find a list of hotels: make sure that the hotel you choose is not too expensive and has enough rooms for the whole class (for this, select more room information about the hotel).

3. To organize the visit of the castle, check the opening hours. In addition to the visit of the castle, you should choose a special event organized by the castle staff. Select the Key Stage you prefer.

4. To organize the travel from Arundel to Eastbourne, click again on the National Railway website. As before, write the departure place (Arundel) and the arrival city (Eastbourne). Select the correct date for the travel and the time (remember that the activities at the castle will end at about 16.00).

5. To find some information about the castle and its history for the poster, visit the website of Arundel Castle.

 

Group 2

You will have to:

- find the information following the instructions below

- prepare a detailed plan of the travel

- find some information about the castle and prepare a poster (with information and photos)

- describe your part of the journey to the rest of the class

Your program will include:

- the accomodation for the night in Eastbourne (28th May)

- the travel from Eastbourne to Hertmonceux Castle

- the visit of the castle and a special activity at the Science Centre (29th May)

- the travel from Herstmonceux Castle to Eastbourne

Let's begin the planning!!

1. To find a place to sleep for the night, click on this site and complete the table (destination and day of arrival). You will probably find a list of hotels: make sure that the hotel you choose is not too expensive and has enough rooms for the whole class (for this, select more room information about the hotel). Choose a hotel not too distant from the railway station and the bus stop (look at the a map of the city then select Eastbourne Town Centre Map).

2. We will have to travel from Eastbourne to Herstmonceux Castle by bus. To organize the travel click on this site. We will leave from Eastbourne Terminus Road and arrive in Herstmoneux (Brewer Arms); we will travel in the morning, at around 9 o'clock and return to Eastbourne at around 3-3.30 p.m.

3. To organize the visit of the castle, check the opening hours. In addition to the visit of the castle, you should plan a special activity at the Science Center (chose the one you prefer).

5. To find some information about the castle and its history for the poster, visit the website of Herstmonceux Castle.

Group 3

You will have to:

- find the information following the instructions below

- prepare a detailed plan of the travel

- find some information about the castle and prepare a poster (with photos)

- describe your part of the journey to the rest of the class 

Your program will include:

- the travel from Eastbourne to Maidstone (29th May)

- the accomodation for two nights in Maidstone (29th and 30th May)

- the visit of Leeds Castle (30th May)

- the travel from Maidstone to Hever Castle (31th May)

Let's begin the planning!!

1. To organize the travel from Eastbourne to Maidstone, click on National Railway website. Then write the departure place (Eastbourne) and the arrival city (Maidstone). Select the correct date for the travel and the time (around 5 p.m.).

2. To find a place to sleep, click on this site and complete the table (destination, day of arrival and day of departure). You will probably find a list of hotels: make sure that the hotel you choose is not too expensive and has enough rooms for the whole class (for this, select more room information about the hotel).

3. To organize the visit of the castle, check the opening hours. In addition to the visit of the castle, you should organize a special event organized by the castle staff. Find the Special Event organized for the day of our visit.

4. To organize the travel from Maidstone to Hever Castle, click on National Railway website. As before, write the departure place (Maidstone) and the arrival city (Hever). Select the correct date for the travel and the time (the group will leave Maidstone in the morning, after breakfast, at around 9 o'clock).

5. To find some information about the castle and its history for the poster, visit the website of Leeds Castle.

Group 4

You will have to:

- find the information following the instructions below

- prepare a detailed plan of the travel

- find some information about the castle and prepare a poster (with photos)

- describe your part of the journey to the rest of the class

Your program will include:

- the visit of Hever Castle

- the travel from Hever to Sevenoaks

- the accomodation for the night in Sevenoaks

- the travel from Sevenoaks to Heathrow Airport, Terminal 2 (1th June)

Let's begin the planning!!

1. To organize the visit of the castle, check the opening hours. In addition to the visit of the castle, you should organize a special event organized by the castle staff. Choose the activities you prefer.

2. To organize the travel from Hever to Sevenoaks, click on National Railway website. Then write the departure place (Hever) and the arrival city (Sevenoaks). Select the correct date for the travel and the time (we will leave the castle at about 4-5 p.m.).

3. To find a place to sleep for the night, click on this site and complete the table (destination and day of arrival). You will probably find a list of hotels: make sure that the hotel you choose is not too expensive and has enough rooms for the whole class (for this, select more room information about the hotel).

3. 4. To organize the travel from Sevenoaks to the airport, click on National Railway website. As before, write the departure city (Sevenoaks) and the arrival place (Heathrow Airport, Terminal 2). Select the correct date for the travel and the time (we will travel early in the morning; we must be at the airport at around 11 a.m.).

5. To find some information about the castle and its history for the poster, visit the website of Hever Castle.

 

 

 

 

Step 4

Now prepare a detailed plan of the journey. Here below you have the first part as an example:

27th May

15.05    Departure from Lugano Airport

17.50 (local time) Arrival in London (at Heathrow Airport, Terminal 2)

 

Once the program is finished, prepare a poster with photos and information about the castle you chose.
