Step 1: Teacher will access students prior knowledge on phonics and phonemic awareness.
This will be accomplished by the teacher introducing the "OCR" sound-card reading series and asking students to identify letters and sounds.
Step 2: The teacher will choose students either randomly or systematically to "decode" small words.
Example 1: bat, hat, cat, sat, mat.
Example 2: set, pet, met, wet,get
Step 3: Once this task has been completed, students will be broken up into random reading groups and given decodable books to read. While the students are reading in groups, the teacher will informally assess students in order to determine the ability levels of each student.

Step 4: After the prior knowledge lesson has been completed, the teacher will then begin to teach a series of lessons on decoding words and short sentences.
This will be completed first through a system known as "sound word-blending."
Teacher: "Letter" (points to the letter b)
Students: "B"
Teacher: "Sound" (points to the letter b)
Students: "buh"
This type of call and response lesson will continue for no more than 10 minutes. It is a mini-lesson that must be repeated for every letter of the alphabet.
