Teacher Process
The students' tasks have already been divided into days. However, there is no problem in extending the time limit if you consider it necessary. Here are some directions for each day.
Day 1.
The first step, deciding which picture to look for, should take between 5 and 10 minutes. Make sure every student has chosen a picture and that no 2 students (except when working in pairs) have the same picture. Since all the pictures can be found in the New York Metropolitan museum, all the students can browse through the same web sites. Tell them to restrict their search to French impressionist painters.
The first step would be for them to familiarize themselves with the names of French 18th and 19th century painters. They can do so with the first and the second web sites:
http://www.nga.gov/collection/gallery/french18-2.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_art_of_the_19th_century
Next, they should start their search by introducing the name of French artists in the Search box provided by each museum or take a tour by periods. They make take a while doing that so, you can restrict their search after a while by telling them in which museum they should look for the pictures.
The pictures are
1. Jean Antoine Watteau's Mezzetin
2. Jacques Louis David's The Death of Socrates
3. Eugène Delacroix The Abduction of Rebeca
Day 2
The students should browse the web sites provided to look for the required information about Author, style and painting. Allow the full hour for that. They should prepare the short presentation talking about the painting and the artist at home.
Day 3
Students in each group team up. Distribute two copies of the Interview and the Picture template to each student. Each one of the students will impersonate the artist and answer the question the other members ask him. Make sure every student fills in his/her template.
Day 4
This is a good start to know what wikis are about. The site contains a guided tour and offers free space for your wiki.
Ideally, you should create a wiki before reaching Day 5. Ideally also, your students should already know about wikis. Today’s task is to introduce some of what the students have learnt about the period in the common wiki. Encourage them to introduce pictures and be creative. The information introduced shouldn’t be more than a page. Make sure they describe the painting styles (Rococo and Neoclassicism), and write some information about the three painters they have been reading about (major works, influences, characteristics...). Copy and Paste should be penalized. Let them choose the layout.
Day 5
Every team should have 1 copy of the Wiki Rubric so as to avaluate the other groups. Pick up the rubrics when the students finish the assesment. Next, have them start organizing the Power Point Presentation.
Day 6
Every student should have as many Power Point Rubric copies as groups there are minus one. At the end of the presentations, have each group team up and discuss all presentations. Each team should agree on a puntuation for the other groups.
