Teacher Process

This webquest was designed for fourth grade Life Science.  The students are asked to choose from one of the three animal classes (fish, amphibians, or reptiles), then choose a specific species within that class.

Once they choose their animal, then they will find five adaptations for it.  This can be easily adapted to both older and younger students and students with special needs.  The number of adaptations can be increased or decreased, depending on the grade and ability level.

The final project includes having the students create a model of their animal by representing at least one adaptation they have researched.  Students may show multiple adaptations if they wish.

Day 1:  In the computer lab, divide students into groups of 3, have them read over the webquest and decide what animal researcher they would like to be.  They may begin researching.

Day 2:  In the computer lab, continue researching.  Have them complete the animal adaptation Inspiration document by using the websites provided in the credits area.

Day 3:  Share and compare their animal adaptations Inspiration print-outs with the other animal researchers.  Begin to complete the Venn diagram, comparing and contrasting all three animals.  Remind students to bring any materials needed to create their animal model.

Day 4:   Finish the Venn diagram.  Develop a plan to create the animal adaptation model.  Begin the model.

Day 5:  Finish the model.  Write a rough draft, one-paragraph description about the model and what adaptation is being represented.

Day 6:  Wrap-up.  Finish a final draft of the paragraph.  Display all three animal models and descriptions together in the hallway.

*It may be fun to plan a field trip to the local zoo!  The students would be able to see real-life animals and check if their animal adaptation museum is accurate.
