Standards
This WebQuest integrates the following 8th grade California social studies state standards - United States History and Geography: Growth and Conflict:
8.6 Students analyze the divergent paths of the American
people from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced, with emphasis
on the Northeast.
- Study the lives of black Americans who gained
freedom in the North and founded schools and churches to advance their rights
and communities.
- Examine the women's suffrage movement (e.g., biographies, writings, and speeches of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Fuller, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony).
8.8 Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people in the West from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced.
- Describe
the role of pioneer women and the new status that western women achieved
(e.g., Laura Ingalls Wilder, Annie Bidwell; slave women gaining freedom in
the West;
8.9 Students analyze the early and steady attempts to abolish slavery and to realize the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.
- Describe the lives of free blacks and the laws that limited their freedom and economic opportunities.
This WebQuest also meets the standards of the National Council for the Social
Studies (NCSS), which promote the development of students as good
citizens in a culturally diverse, interdependent world.
The content and activities of this project are especially appropriate for the themes of:
- Time, Continuity, and Change: Students focus on how the world has changed in order to gain perspective on the present and the future.
- Individuals, Groups, and Institutions: Students study interactions among individuals, groups, and institutions.
- Power, Authority, and Governance: Students study how people create and change structures of power, authority, and governance.
- Civic Ideals and Practices: Students gain an understanding of the ideals, principles, and practices of citizenship in a democratic republic.
The WebQuestion also hits technology foundation standards for students:
- use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity
- use technology tools to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences
- use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences
