Task
At first you will work individually to do research on hydraulic systems, the history of robots, and how they have changed and been used over time. Once you have gained a better knowledge of the history and different types of robots, you will reflect on the use of robots in our society today and will also think about the possibilities for the future. You will record your research in a work packet provided by the teacher.
Once you have finished the research section, you will form groups of three which will establish a company. Your group’s first assignment will be to design a pamphlet stating a short history of robots and your company’s vision for robots in the future. Your company’s second task will be to design your own hydraulic robot arm that will be used in a series of 2 different challenges. The challenges will involve dropping a pencil into a cup and placing a ping pong ball on top of a plastic bottle. You will keep records of your progress, adjustments, and achievements. Upon completion of this project, your final assignment will be to write a reflection of the things learned and processes you have experienced in this assignment.
Through this activity, you will learn about robotics, hydraulics, and the important roles they play in our society. You will also perform safely in the work shop, use and apply the problem solving method, and work together as a group to accomplish set goals.
