Teacher Process
This WebQuest is very flexible and can be adapted to meet different needs and teaching standards. One possible variation is to have students compose a different melody using the same lyrics as inspiration or to write their own poem about a meaningful event in their own lives.
This project appears to be fairly extensive-however, if the students work in groups, the research portion should not take too long. I allowed the students 10 days to complete the project, which included a decent amount of class time.
Another thing to consider is how you split the students into groups. Since band contains students grades 9-12, I tried to pair underclassmen with upperclassmen. My hope was the older students would have the opportunity to model and teach the younger students how to go about organizing a project like this. This seemed to work very well in my class.
