Process

First, the ten of you in the Gatsby Cruise roles should go to this link as an overview. Then each role's tasks and sites for study are listed below.

* denotes a special activity or assignment to go with the presentation or project board

ROLES:

ROLE #1 Interior designer: Use the links below to explain more about art and design.  Specifically, look for answers to the following questions, but don't be limited by these questions if you find something interesting that should be included.

1. What was Art Deco and how and when did this name come about?  *Find and print or draw examples of this style for your project board.

2. What kinds of furniture  or fixtures were used in a typical sitting room, bedroom, dining room, or bath?  *List the styles or types of furnishings that were popular. What unusual features do you find? Observe the unique and report. *Make a detailed list of any styles and colors you would use in a lux ury apartment on the ship.

3. What colors or designs were prevalent in furniture, fabrics, wallpaper, and accessories?  *Find and print or draw pictures that represent this.

4. Find examples of famous architecture built roughly in the 20s. Some was started a little before or completed a little after the decade, but the influence of the decade is there.  How did the architecture (inside and out) reflect the attitudes of the times?

Use the following link about the art and architecture to help with this also. *Write a paragraph that explains the cultural attitudes about  the skyscraper.

5. Describe with words and diagrams the  way you would decorate the ballroom and dining area according to the 1920s decor. Use pictures of restaurants, music halls, or homes to give you ideas.

ROLE #2 Master Chef- Use this link to locate menus and recipes for a formal dinner.*Relate the historical significance of this menu to the 1920s.

Culinary Arts Cookbook-This will give you recipes for your menus for all three meals of the day aboard ship.

 * Make a sample breakfast menu.

*Prepare a grocery list for the cook's assistant.

Plan a party to celebrate the last night of the cruise. What themes are available and appropriate for the party?

*Relate three  party themes on this site to something in the cultural historyof the 1920s. How do the themes fit the time period?

Properly prepare the table settings and guest list for the formal dinner. *Sketch a diagram of the table setting for four at a table.

Make sure that everyone remembers table manners. *List five instructions that include use of the silverware, plates, or the food.*List table manners that would seem out-of-place for today.

Another section to look at is Emily Post's commentary on travel manners, especially onboard  a ship.

*List five tips about manners that you find unusual.  From the manners, list five morals or beliefs that seemed to exist during this time about public behavior.

Explain how the Speakeasies helped circumvent the Volstead Act. *Write a descriptive paragraph about the typical speakeasy.

*From this document on the Volstead Act, explain in a paragraph why Prohibition failed.

ROLE #3- Fashion Coordinator-You should first do some reading about the attitudes of the young Flappers.

*Write a paragraph in which you interpret the attitudes of the young ladies who claim to be Flappers. In what ways are their attitudes about their clothing and lifestyle reflective of the attitudes of young people today? *From the site listed above, choose three typical outfits for ladies and men for the  last night party of the cruise. Also use the men's site listed below.

*Print or sketch the daywear and evening wear that the ladies, including Louise Brooks would

wear on board the ship.  (See Mrs. Rowell for printed material of a website that was broken but would allow user to print the material).

*From this article, draw or print a picture of a typical flapper and answer the following questions.  When possible, label the picture with descriptions from your answers to the questions.

2. What was the "one hour dress"?

3. What part of the body was often revealed that had in previous decades been hidden?

4. What hairstyle became the rage?

5. What colors and types of fabric were used for the clothing?

Men's clothing: Find appropriate menswear for the cruise. Look for this site too.

ROLE #4 Entertainment Agent-Remember what you have seen and read on sites about the JazzAge.

Research the jazz clubs in New York where many of Fitzgerald's friends might have spent some late nights. From these pages choose some famous musicians to play on board the ship. *Design a  mini-poster as a part of your project board to display on an easel outside the ballroom. Creatively depict who will be performing in the ballroom in the evenings.

*Download several songs to play during the day while passengers are sunning on the deck of the Fitzgerald. Plan to play these at some point in your presentation.

*Plan a dance marathon for one night of the cruise. Give examples of the dances you might see out on the dance floor.

*Design a game using the slang of the 1920s. Be sure to teach the class a few examples first and then build on the list as they learn. Plan to play this one afternoon on board the ship.

ROLE #5-Omnium Gatherum- You are responsible for bringing together the cultural influences that affected the economy, politics, crime, technology, and literature. Of course you cannot report on everything in these categories, but choose two important items from each on which to report.

Several links below should help you, but try to expand beyond these .

You might start with an article that gives insight into the Flapper psyche. Read also this site about other cultural and economic influences, and pick out five influences here to display and explain on your project board. You may have to go to other sites to find pictures to fo with your descriptions.

Read the site about F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Make comparisons between what was taking place in the 1920's and what Fitzgerald's personal life was like.

As you read about the economy in this next site, find out how Henry Ford contributed to the way people lived and thought. What about other technology? *Read the article, choose five things that seemed to influence the economy at this time, and write a paragraph for your projectboard that explains each influence.

Invite a Miss America from this decade. Explain how Miss America was chosen.

Explain who the members of The Lost Generation were and what they represented.

Invite several members from the world of organized crime. Read the article about the St.Valentine's Day Massacre. What questions does this article make you wonder about.  List at least five questions that you would like to ask one of the organized crime figures about their organization.

Now that you are almost finished with the research segment of your role, it is time to collaborate more with your fellow cruise plan members.  Make sure that you have not unnecessarily duplicated information; make changes if necessary to avoid repeated information, since there is plenty of information out there.  Try to make your ideas flow so that your individual products do fit together for a unified cruise experience.

Now is the time to purchase materials such as the project board, glue, markers, or paper.  Please let me know if you need help with getting any of these items.

Make sure that you have completed all of the activities that have an "*" beside them in your role instructions. These paragraphs, diagrams, or lists will accompany your project board. Make sure that all pictures have labels or legends. Check for misspellings in your lettering.  Try to make your project boards present a coordinated effect with markings, labelings, and letters. Some variety is fine and expected, of course.

Make sure to follow the rubrics for both the project board , brochure, and the oral presentation.

Make sure that you know the due date for your presentation and that all of you are ready. It is important that you communicate thoroughly to decide who will introduce the cruise project and give an overview and who will speak next, etc. Have these details worked out ahead of time.

Be ready as you conclude to answer questions from your classmates after they have listened to all of you.  Any one of the planners can answer a question.  You should have enough working knowledge of the 1920s to be able to explain most concepts or be able to find the answer easily.
