Teacher Process

Before Integrating this Web Quest into your Lessons:

--Consider how well this will work with your unit.

--Make sure that your students receive a proper and informative introduction to the Maya civilization before they see the Web Quest.

--Go through the Web Quest yourself to determine which areas will need extra support or extra instruction.  This will also provide insight into the processes that will be involved with the assignment.

--Think about any modifications that will be needed to meet the needs of all students.

--Make sure that students will have enough time to complete the Web Quest (at least six days).

--You should pre-select students for the task forces to maximize student learning.  Think about which students will work best together.

--Go through the Web Quest with the students so that they know what is expected.  This will also allow students to ask questions.  You will be able to use this initial exposure to determine student comfort with the assignment as well.

During the Web Quest:

--Monitor the students as they work.

--Use the first process activity to create a timeline of the Maya civilization with students.

--Periodically check on the groups to make sure that they are headed in the right direction.  Sit in on at least two of each group’s brainstorm sessions. Check the resulting written ideas of each brainstorm session to make sure students understand the task.

--Remind students to go back to the rubric to ensure that they are incorporating all the requirements.

--Monitor students’ use of the internet.  Make sure that they stick to the websites provided.  If students want to explore new sights, provide guidelines for them.  Remind them that the internet is a tool for learning and that it is a privilege that should not abuse.

--Hold a conference with each task force to talk with them about their plans for the ceremony.  This should serve as a checkpoint to determine students’ progress with the ideas.
