Students will navigate through four tasks in cooperative groups, and will learn about and explore the life of those involved with the Underground Railroad. The four tasks categories are: 1) Conductor - research escape routes; 2) Slave - research hidden codes for escape; 3) Slave Owner/Abolitionist - explore slave songs from perspective of abolitionist and slave owner; 4) News Reporter - research the life of Harriet Tubman.

Introduction

For almost 100 years, slaves were captured and brought against their will to America to work as slave laborers and in many times cruel conditions.  Many slaves ran away from their "owners" seeking freedom, and then continued the struggle once they were free to help others escape.

During this Webquest you will learn about slave life and the efforts that were required to assist those seeking freedom to the North using the Underground Railroad.  You will actively participate in one of four tasks where you will work cooperatively in a group to discover and experience the Pre- and Civil War era.  Your group will work together to present the information you have discovered to the rest of the class using a variety of projects.

By the end, you will have learned a great deal about the Underground Railroad, and you should be able to share this information with your classmates in your chosen format.
