Teacher Process

This lesson plan activity should take place over several days, as it will take some time for children to gather the information, analyse the data, develop a dental health theme around a selected Fairy Tale, write and perform a skit to showcase their learning, and reflect on the whole process by writing a letter.

Step 1:

- Decide how you want your students to be grouped.

- Describe the different job roles of the activity, and let students choose their roles themselves.

Step 2:

- Ensure that proper time is allowed for students to gather appropriate data, for them to work collaboratively and independently, and for them to produce their Reader’s Theater skit.

- Allow students time to explore the materials and resources given to them.

- Observe the different groups to ensure there isn't any misconceptions.

- Have students record their dental health findings on a word processing program or on a sheet of paper that will be passed into you.

- Have students individually review what they have learned from the various dental heath websites. Furthermore, have them print and read The Tooth Fairy oath to become tooth masters themselves.

Step 3:

- Read a Fairy Tale to the class and ask them do they know what kind of story it is? Have they ever heard one before? Can they name others? Did they ever read a fractured Fairy Tale before?

- Instruct students to go to the two links recommended in the lesson activity and read the Fairy Tales given. Once read, have the students collectively agree in their groups on ONE Fairy Tale to use for their Reader’s Theater.

- Encourage students to be courteous, kind and respectful of their group members.

- Once the Fairy Tale is selected, have students dissect it. Here, the group will decide whether or not they will use the whole Fairy Tale, just a scene, just one character etc for the creation of their Reader’s Theater drama.

Step 4:

- Give students examples of some dental health/fairy tale combinations. For example:
~ Beauty and the Bad Breath Beast
    ~ Hansel and Cavity
~ Fluoride White and the seven dwarfs

- Students will begin rearranging their chosen Fairy Tale to suit the dental health theme. Encourage children to think outside the box.

- Listen attentively to any questions and/or concerns that the students may have regarding their masterpiece.

- Ensure ALL students have a part to do in the Reader’s Theater production. Also, have each student individually prepare for his/her role and then have a group practice to ensure cohesiveness.

- Perform to the class, and be sure they are prepared to answer one question from the audience about the dental health concepts introduced during the skit.

Step 5:

- Have students reflect on their learning by having them go to the website given for The Tooth Fairy's email address.

- Here, you will read the instructions and ensure all students record things they have learned since beginning the acitivty on dental health, and how Fairy Tales helped promote it.

- Provide students with a class/school email address for those who would like responses.

- Students will send their emails, and print off a version for you to assess.
