Teacher Process
This unit should be taught over 2 weeks.
Bring in samples and visuals of the Dust Bowl era (picture books, articles, bibliographies, movie clips, and book reviews) to introduce the novel, Out of the Dust.
It should take one week to read the book, allow for discussion and activties that get students thinking about the setting found in the novel.
Bring in news papers, so that students have an example of what a newspaper contains, and what their overall goal is. Motivate students by letting them vote on a name for thier future paper.
Allow studetns 1-2 days for online research and picture activity.
Allow 1-2 days to for group work of writing articles.
Allow 2 days for writing workshop/peer review, and revision.
