Teacher Process
Depending on your students, this lesson might take at least four days of 90 minute lessons.
Day One: Computer lab
Step 1: Introduce students to the lesson. Explain the various components and what will be expected of them upon completion of this assignment.
Step 2: Separate students into four groups, ensuring to differentiate learners based on their strengths and weaknesses.
Step 3: Assign groups to a poet, instructing them to visit the Web sites listed under the process section of this webquest.
Day Two: In the classroom
Step 1: After the students have visited the Web sites and gathered information on their poet, they need to start compiling the information in order to organize it into an essay.
Step 2: Now that the students have organized their information, I would recommend having some sort of graphic organizer so that they may better organize their information into essay format.
*** You should be working with each group to ensure students are on task and understand the assignment
Step 3: Print out a copy of the rubric and the components of the essay for each student to have.
Day Three: Focusing on the poetry
Step 1: Review literary devices that are present in the poetry the students are analyzing.
Step 2: Conduct a lesson on literary devices and have students create a foldable for this aspect.
Step 3: Next, students should review their poetry, looking for such literary devices and other aspects of poetry (rhyme scheme, etc) that is present.
Step 4: Students should begin creating their own poetry that emulates their poet's.
Day Four: Workshop
Step 1: Each student should have a copy of their poem. Jigsaw this portion so that each student can present their poem to the other students. Have other students proof the poem checking for elements of poetry, grammar, etc.
Day Five: SLAM!
