Learners
I am teaching an 11th grade AVID/Honors American Literature course. The class is divided into quarters instead of terms, like the rest of the English classes. This means that we flip flop between AVID curriculum and Honors American Literature curriculum. This can be interesting and provides an opportunity to tie curriculum together and allow them to overlap. The students in AVID are mostly college bound, though there are some who may be receiving certificates instead of diplomas, or have Individual Education Plans. The school I am teaching at, Hoover High School, is an urban inner-city school in the City Heights area of San Diego. The school has a fluid population of approximately 2,300 students. There are thirty-six different languages spoken by the students on campus. This makes for a large percentage of students as English Language Learners.
