Teacher Process
Realistically speaking, this project will take at least one week. I would spend the first day talking about what the students are interested in and introduce the war in Uganda and how children are involved. Also, play the music video found here. This is the song Fall Out Boy recorded in Uganda. The video has some incredible images. This video is a one minute clip of a Fall Out Boy member talking about what they did. It is quite helpful. On this first day, have the students write three questions they will want to research in the library. They must be related to social change, what Fall Out Boy is doing, and what is happening in Uganda.
The webquest says give the students one hour to research their one question (actually three, but they need to narrow it down to one by the end of the hour). In most cases, this will not be nearly enough time. The students will need some time to go through the links on the webquest and explore on their own. This may take two or three days. Not a problem.
After the students have completed their research sheets or note taking, they will need some time to discuss and figure out who is doing what part of the essay. This can happen before or after the panel discussion. The panel discussion should realistically take 30 minutes. The students will present their ideas to their group, and they will talk about what they learned. They will also have the opportunity to give suggestions to their classmates ideas on how to fix the problem. I would attach a small writing assignment to this.
The last part is the essay. This should take between 3-4 days for the students to do the work in class. They should also do one day of peer edit after they complete writing. This will give the students a way to see what the other groups came up with. Seeing new information might inspire them, and seeing similar information may validate their work.
Wrap up however you want!
