Conclusion

During this project each group chose a character in Paradise Lost to be the main character in the poem. The four characters that might have been picked were: Satan, God, Adam, & Eve. The real question is; why would Milton write his addition to the epic tradition, but leave it ambiguous as to who the main character was? What was he trying to show the reader? Or was he simply trying to test the reader?
Is Satan written to be so appealing to readers because Milton wanted readers to be attracted to the wicked figure of the devil? He wanted you to be tempted away from the truth in his poem just as he believes people are tempted away from the truth by evil.
Does that mean the God is the main character? Then why is He only present so briefly in the poem? He does not take any direct action so how can he be the main character?
If the main character is Adam or Eve then why do they never seem in control of the situation? They never stand on their own, but are constantly led and directed as if puppets to the other characters.
Perhaps the point is that the reader makes the choice. The reader determines who is the important character in the poem. Which character should be modeled, which character should be called an epic hero? YOU the reader decide all this. You seem to make all the decisions and have to follow the tests of Satan’s lore and God’s absent; perhaps Milton wrote his poem so that you the reader are the main character.
