Process

Once in your groups, it is time to select a character!

Please select from the following subordinate characters from the story Flowers for Algernon

Miss Kinnian: Charlie's night teacher, who also convinced Charlie to participate in the experiment

Joe Carp: One of Charlie's co-workers at the factory

Frank Reilly: Another one of Charlie's co-workers at the factory

Mr. Donnegan: Charlie's boss at the factory

Mrs. Flynn: Charlie's landlady

Doctor Straus: One of the doctors who is conducting the experiments on Charlie

Doctor Nemur: Another doctor who is conducting the experiments on Charlie

Once you have selected a character it is time to research the life of the character!

Research Guidelines:

Each member of the group will be responsible for researching one aspect of the life of the character.

For example, if you chose Charlie, then you will need to research:

1. his mental disability- what is it, what is it like to have the disease, and how is someone diagnosed with the disability

2.  the type of job he held- what were the job qualifications, what does the employee have to do? and how much does he make at the job?

3. What kind of lifestyle would a person during the 1960s have? What would he do for fun? What are the current events of the time period and does that affect Charlie at all?

Here are some websites that will help you in your research!

Once you have finished researching the characters it is time to select four progress reports and rewrite the progress reports from the point of view from the character you selected. Remember, the progress reports will need to include:

  1. The same events that occurred originally in the text
  2. Similar grammar and punctuation that would be appropriate for the education level of the character
Most importantly, THE PROGRESS REPORT NEEDS TO BE BELIEVABLE.

The format for the progress report will be:

  1. Each progress report needs to be a minimum 2 pages
  2. Use the date as the title of each progress report
  3. Typed, double spaced, 12pt font and one inch margins
Have fun and be creative!
