This lesson was designed for an ESL 5-6 class. They have already been briefly introduced to literary terms, and in this activity will explore six key terms in further detail before composing their very own poems.

Teacher Introduction

This lesson is a way to begin a new unit on poetry, which is something my classes are not too familiar with. The ultimate goal is for students to compose their own poetry using literary devices.

We begin by choosing six literary devices that we want students to be able recognize and use in their own writing. Each student is assigned a literary device to research online and then we use a jigsaw activity in order for the students to teach each other. After their initial research, students who have the same devices should work as a group to create a poster which they can use to teach it to the rest of the class.

The last step is for students to write their own poems.
