Process

Step 1: I will give everyone an envelope with a role (Transportation expert / Recreation director / Accommodation expert / Financial consultant) and a group number inside.
Step 2: Get into groups of four by the same group number and make sure your group members know your own role.
Step 3: The roles and tasks belonging to each are described below.
Step 4: Everyone will do the research for their own role to become an expert on the area they are researching. Although you are experts, you are not the one who makes the final decision. After the research is done for a role, come together as a group with your calculations and make your decisions as a whole. You will be graded on your teamwork, so try to listen to each other and participate as much as you can.
Overall Task
Your overall task is to design a trip to New York City for your group and to present it in a PowerPoint presentation which include your detailed itinerary, itemized budget, reasonable justifications for trip choices.
- The trip is to be
5-days-long, including the days you travel.
- You will have to
determine transportation cost from Buffalo to New York City, as well as the
transportation cost of getting around New York City.
- Your group will need
to have one activity planned for each full day when you are in New York City.
- Your group will need
to have a plan for three meals each day.
- Your group will need
to create an itemized budget for your trip. For each item in the budget.
- Your total budget for the trip is $2000.
- You
are underage, so you must take an adult with you. Make sure all your
accommodations and plans include the cost of one adult and three children.

Role/ Task of Transportation Expert
- Research the different modes of transportation to and from NYC. How will you get from Buffalo to NYC? Air? Bus? Train? Car? Remember if you fly, you have to count your transportation cost to and from the airports. What are the benefits of certain modes of transportation over others, what are the drawbacks? Consider cost, comfort, and time.
- How will you get around once you get to NYC? Research options and be ready to make recommendations when you meet with your group to discuss where you are going. Be ready to explain the best ways of getting around NYC. What are the benefits of certain modes of transportation over others, what are the drawbacks? Consider cost, comfort, and time.

Be ready to assist the Financial Consultant in keeping track of Transportation costs.
Role/ Tasks of Recreation Director

Research activities for the days you will be in NYC. Plan at least one activity per day. Create an informative and engaging description of each activity. Research more than enough activities; remember the group decisions must be unanimous.

Find graphics to further enhance the description of activities and include these in your PowerPoint presentation.
- Be ready to explain why you chose the activities you did. What factors influenced your decision? Cost? Location of event? Interest level? Educational value?

Be ready to assist the Financial Consultant in keeping track of transportation costs. Keep track of admission costs, etc. Remember you will have one adult and three children attending each activity.
Role/Tasks of Accommodation Expert

Research accommodations in the city. Research a range of alternatives. Be ready to provide recommendations when you meet with your group to make decisions. Why did you choose the options you did? Be ready to give justification for your choices. What factors influenced you? Cost? Location? Quality of service?

Research dining options in the city. Research a range of alternatives. You need a plan for three meals each day. Be ready to provide recommendations when you meet with your group to make decisions. Why did you choose the places you have picked? Be ready to give justification for your choices. What factors influenced you? Cost? Location? Type of food offered? Consider places that will be located near the activities you will be doing.

Role/Tasks of
Financial Consultant
- Collect data from your group members.
- Create
an itemized budget that includes each cost on a separate line. Make sure your
budget is clear, balanced and easy to read.

Making Decisions- Collaboration
- After each member has completed their research, it is time to meet together as a team and discuss the options for your trip. You may want to check out this process guide to help you in building group consensus.
- As a group you need to decide on the following:

c. What to do the days you are in NYC? You need at least one activity for every full day you are in NYC (3-4 activities).
d. Where to eat? You need a plan for three meals each day.

Your power point presentation should include pictures of the activities and destinations as well as pricing information. On the bottom of each power point slide, place the name of the group member who researched the information to show how you participated and delegated the responsibilities. Each activity should be well described to show that you and your group members truly researched your trip. Check over all of your text within your power point for spelling and grammar errors. Also, be sure that you power point presentation is appealing, easy to see, and demonstrates that you know how to properly use the program.
