Explore the migration of the early Hawaiians. Where did they come from? How did they get to Hawaii? What did they bring with them? All of these questions will be answered when you explore this WebQuest. Learn Hawaiian culture and the art of non-instrumental navigation.
Take your students back into history during the time when the first Polynesians voyaged the vast Pacific Ocean using the stars as their guide. During this time travel students will discover through online investigation and mini lessons taught in the classroom the origins of the Ancient Hawaiians. The students will investigate who the original Polynesians were and where they came from and why they left for Hawaii. The students will study about the type of vessels the Polynesians traveled in to get to Hawaii and build a replica of a double hulled sailing canoe. Students will also learn about how the Polynesians navigated using the stars and use interactive tools to practice navigation. Students will learn about the different types of tools, plants and animals the Polynesians brought with them and why. The students will learn some of the important values of the cultures of the migrating Polynesians. Finally, students will create a video journal to share what they witnessed during their time travel adventure.
