Task

How Did Life Begin on Earth?

You will be assigned to one of four teams.  Each team will research an aspect of this question and develop a PowerPoint presention outlining what they have learned and why it is the best possible explanation for how life on Earth began.  After listening to all of the presentations, our class will choose the most compelling theory about the Origin of Life and make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees.  This choice will be the theory that is taught in Earth and Life science class from now on.

Team One, representing the Biology Teachers, will research the chemical evolution theory of life.  This theory states that the gases and water present on early Earth came together to form the organic molecules that are the basis of life.  The molecules eventually came together to form living organisms.

Team Two, representing the Physics Teachers, will research Exobiology, the idea that life actually began somewhere else in the Universe and came to Earth, either inside a meteorite or possibly brought here by some other life forms.

Team Three, representing a newly created committee of the Parent's Association, will research Creationism and Intelligent Design, the idea that a Supernatural Force (a Creator or God) created life on Earth.

Team Four, representing the Religion Department, will research the Episcopalian Church's ideas on the origin of life.  This team will also review our school's mission statement, beliefs, and objectives and present the theory that best fits our school.

Remember, you will need to convince the Board that your theory is the best explanation.  Be sure to review the evidence that supports your assigned theory and/or the beliefs of its proponents.  Check the Evaluation section to see how your presentation will be scored.
