Students who go through the Finding a newsworthy focus Webquest should be able to focus a more general topic into a focused story with publication potential and a clear news hook.
What is news value and why is it important to a journalist?
News value is the characteristic of a story that gives it publication potential. It is the element or elements of the story that make it newsworthy – the reason people would be interested to read it in the paper. Being able to spot the news value in a story and include it in the written article separates the rookie student reporters from those who’ll get clips by the end of the semester.
By the end of this Webquest, students will be familiar with the elements of news value, be able to identify them in a news article and be able to focus broad topics into stories with news value.
