Introduction

 What was it like to travel to California before there were cars, trains, or airplanes to take you there?

The year is 1849.  You live on the East Coast of the United States, on a farm in Pennsylvania.  Life on the farm is very hard, and you are looking for other ways to make your fortune. You also yearn to discover new places and people.

Then you hear the news; gold was discovered in California!  To be more exact, it was found in the San Francisco area.  You immediately decide that San Francisco is the place where you can make your fortune—quickly.  You soon find out that some of your friends and relatives have the same idea and you all decide to join together for the journey and pull your resources.
