Process

As you begin your journey, remember to save your work in your group folder.  Here are the tasks you need to complete!


Task 1: Pharaoh's Name

Choose a name for your pharaoh from the link below.  Write this name on the front of your folder.  In the upper-right hand corner of the folder write the names of the individuals in the group.

Task 2: The Kings of Ancient Egypt

During the time of Ancient Egypt, rulers were not known as Pharaohs but as Kings and Queens.  According to an Egyptian Legend, the first Kings of Egypt were later some of Egypt's most famous gods.

To learn more about the great pharaohs of Egypt visit The Kings of Ancient Egypt website. Next, explore the Ancient Egyptian Jobs and the Ancient Egyptian Soldier websites.  Finally, visit the Vizier website.  For each website, write a 2 paragraph write-up.  This will you a total of 8 paragraphs.

All four write-ups can be completed on the same paper.  Be sure to include as much information as possible as you will be sharing this information with your group.

 


 

Task 3: Map of Ancient Egypt

What is the main river that runs through Ancient Egypt?  Click on the following link to find out? Map of Ancient Egypt

Choose 4 cities below and write 2 paragraphs per choice.  This will give you a total of 8 paragraphs.  In your write-up, be sure to state whether your city has a pyramid or temple and if so, what is the name of the structure and who was it built for.  Also, name the continent Ancient Egypt is on.  Include any additional information that will help you teach your group members about each city. 

In addition, print off a Map of Ancient Egypt and circle the cities you investigated.  While discussing your cities, use the map to show your group member where your cities are located

Task 4: Egyptian Art

Ancient Egyptians expressed their art through paintings and sculptures.  The majority of their art was discovered in tombs and monument.  This could be because of the emphasis Egyptians put on life after death and the preservation of knowledge of the past.

Visit the Egyptian Tomb Art website and write two paragraphs about what you have learned. Afterwards, explore the characteristics of Egyptian Art website and choose 3 topics to write about.  Each topic should have two paragraphs.  Remember that you will be teaching your group members about Egyptian Art.

Visit the Egyptian Wall Paintings website and explore the pictures.

 

Task 5: Egyptian Temples and Pyramids

Throughout the different dynasties and rulers of Ancient Egypt, many aspects of life changed as time went by.  One of these changes involved the way tombs and pyramids were built and decorated.  Explore either the temples or pyramids of Ancient Egypt.

Explore the website on Temples and answer the following questions:

  • How did the evolution of Royal Tombs change from the Step Pyramids to The New Kingdom Tombs?
  • How did the tombs of Noble change from the 1st Dynasty burials to the Middle Kingdom through the New Kingdom tombs?
  • How did the tombs of Workers change from the Tombs of the pyramids builders at Giza to the New Kingdom tombs of the workers at Deir el-Medina, Thebes

Visit either The Temple of Karnak or Abu Simbel and answer the following questions:

  • What was the temple made of?
  • For whom was the temple built for?

Explore the websites on Pyramids and answer the following questions:
  • Choose a pyramid from the 3rd dynasty and compare it to a pyramid from the 4th dynasty.
  • Choose a pyramid from the 5th dynasty and compare it to a pyramid from the 6th dynasty
  • Pyramids can be divided into what 2 categories?
  • How did the 1st step pyramid evolve and develop?
  • Which pyramid is regarded as the peak of development of the standard pyramid


 
 
 
Task 6: Hieroglyphs

How did the Egyptians communicate during Ancient Egypt?  To find out, explore the website on hieroglyphs.

After exploring the website, answer the following question:
  • How were hieroglyphs written?
  • What were the two forms of hieroglyphs and what do they mean?
  • What were hieroglyphs used for? 
Click on the Translation Activity and try the translator by typing in the name of your pharaoh.  One member of the group should print off the his name and tape it to the front of the folder under your pharaoh's name.  Next, type in your name and print it off.
 
 
 

Task 7: Tomb Mural

Throughout time, the tombs of Ancient Egypt began more complex.  One of the most noticeable changes that were found in the later tombs was the artwork especially in the tomb mural.  The Tomb Mural was the area in the tomb where an individual's sarcophagus or coffin was placed.  For this task you will be creating one wall of your tomb mural.

Before creating your tomb mural, explore the websites on characteristics of Egyptian Art and Egyptian Wall Paintings.  This will give you some information on how to get started.  You will also have the chance to see some real examples of tomb murals.  In addition, explore the websites on Canon of Proportion and Horror Vacui.

For your artwork, you must complete the following tasks:

In addition to the artwork, you should also write a few sentences, using hieroglyphs, explaining some of your accomplishments as ruler of Egypt.  Since many tombs had a curse placed on them, you may create your own.  This curse must be in hieroglyphs.

As part of your final task, each group will present their tomb mural to the class.  You will need to explain to the class what your pharaoh accomplish, what does your artwork means, and give us your curse if you decided to place one.
