Process
You a now a character in the Underground Railroad.
1. Your teacher will divide you into groups of four. Each member of your group will choose to be a slave, a slave owner, a conductor, or a friendly Northerner. No two members of your group can have the same role. Print, fill out, and turn in this role sheet once you decide.
2. Read about the Underground Railroad.
- Find your role and click on the link in the column next to it.
- Fill out this graphic organizer as you look at your website. You may not be able to fill out the entire graphic organizer by yourself. You will share the information you found with you group and fill in your missing information then.

3. Share your graphic organizer with your group. Also share anything else that you found interesting from your website.
- Go in this order: Slave, slave owner, conductor, friendly Northerner
4. Each of you must find information on a topic of the Underground Railroad.
- First, print out these graphic organizers.
- Find your role and use the links next to it to explore your topic.
- Complete the graphic organizer for your topic.
- Hold on to the other graphic organizers (you do not need to fill these out yet).

5. Now that you are an expert on your topic, share your information with your group by Jigsawing.
- Go in this order: Slave, slave owner, conductor, friendly Northerner
- Fill out each graphic organizer (that you already printed) as you listen to everyone else.
6. Based on the information you have found, write a journal entry about your thoughts and feelings. Click on your role link for your assignment. Print and complete to turn in.
7. Now, one at a time, share your journals with your group.
- Go in this order: Slave, slave owner, conductor, friendly Northerner.
- Pay attention to everyone so you can get a better idea of these characters!
8. Go to this website and take part in a virtual Underground Railroad. Think of how your character would respond to what is happening as you go through this.
9. Write another journal entry about your feelings. This time, pretend that the Underground Railroad is complete. Click on your role link for your assignment. Print and complete to turn in.
10. Again, share your journals.
- Go in this order: Friendly Northerner, conductor, slave owner, slave.
11. Now that you have written about your feelings before and after the Underground Railroad, your group will prepare to make an appearance on the Timmy Tom Show! Your group will come to the show to talk about the Underground Railroad. Timmy Tom is your teacher. He/she will interview your group about the Underground Railroad and your roles in it. Remember, you will appear as your character! Make sure you plan to dress AND act the part!
- Brainstorm questions that you may be asked on the show by printing and completing this worksheet.
- Make sure you know how your role was a part of the Underground Railroad. Also know basic facts about the Underground Railroad.
- Print and complete this worksheet to help you.
12. You and your group are ready to make your appearance on The Timmy Tom Show! Get ready to answer Timmy Tom's questions!
Don't forget to:
- Act your part
- Dress as your role
- Speak loudly
- Answer questions completely (Do not just answer yes/no. Explain your answers!)
- Make eye contact with Timmy Tom (your teacher)
- Relax
- Have fun!
