Process
While you are doing these experiments, remember to record in your science journals what you have observed and seen. Record if the experiment worked. Write why you think it did what it did or if anything different or interesting happened.
Look at the WORKSHEET and JOURNAL QUESTIONS before doing the experiment.
Experiment #1: Water Bend
Things you will need:
- Balloon
- Piece of wool, or fur
- Running water
Step by Step:
- Rub the fur or wool on the balloon to charge it.
- Have the water running low and slow
- Hold the balloon next to the running water
Time for WORKSHEET and JOURNAL QUESTIONS-
- What do you think will happen? Why?
Experiment #2: Swinging Cereal
Things you will need:
- Cereal (cheerios or round rice cereal)
- Balloon
- String (about a foot long)
- wool, or fur
Step by Step:
- Tie piece of cereal to one end of the string
- Tape the piece of string on the end of a table or desk. Don't let it touch anything else.
- Rub the balloon with wool or full to charge it.
- Slowly move the balloon close to the piece of cereal.
Time for WORKSHEET and JOURNAL QUESTIONS-
- What did you see happen?
- Why do you think the cereal did what it did?
- Explain in words or draw a picture of what is happening.
- Explain like a scientist why this is happening.
- How is this similar or the same to the WATER BEND?
Experiment #3: Turn the Lights On
Things you will need:
- Florescent light bulb
- piece of wool
- plastic comb
- Head of hair
- a dark room
Step by Step:
- Standing in a dark room:
- Run the plastic comb through your hair as much as you can!
- Touch the plastic comb to the metal on the bulb.
Time for WORKSHEET and JOURNAL QUESTIONS-
- Before doing this experiment make a hypotheses or prediction to what will happen?
- What did the light bulb do when you touched the comb to the metal?
- Explain like a scientist what happened to the bulb and in the experiment.
Questions to ALL the experiments:
- What did you already know?
- What did you learn?
- What were you confused about?
